WSJ Unit reflect on a trip of a lifetime

Date: 10th Aug 2019 Author: Rob Cash

After 18 months of intensive training and fund raising, the ‘Somershire’ WSJ Unit (27 young people from Somerset and 9 from Wiltshire, with 4 leaders) were finally ready to embark upon their journey of a lifetime to the World Scout Jamboree in West Virginia, USA. The Unit had a priceless experience – 12 days on the best Scout camp site in the world with exceptional adventurous activities.

In addition, they enjoyed ‘big city experiences’, seeing the top sights in New York and Washington DC, where they visited the national monuments and watched a baseball game. Home hospitality was in a Scout hut in Hamilton, Ontario, where a Canadian called ‘Goat’ looked after them and they visited the Niagara Falls. Back in the UK we have all enjoyed following their adventures on social media, local radio, and national TV.

Put your phone down and what are you left with? Just teamwork, courage and the skills to succeed.’
