It was an honour to welcome Somerset’s two most recent Queen’s Scouts to the County Celebration Event on 8th April 2018, in advance of their attendance at St Georges Day Parade at Windsor Castle in 2 weeks time.
Andrew Duncan and Matthew Jones are both originally from 1st Huntspill and Highbrdge Group in Moors and Coastal District.
Before presenting these remarkable young men with their Queen’s Scout awards, the County Commissioner, Elizabeth Henderson, reflected on what an outstanding accomplishment this is.
The first requirement is to complete 18 nights away with Scouting. After some research, a rough calculation of the combined number of nights away that Matthew and Andrew will have completed during their Scouting careers is probably nearer to a year under canvas.
They have completed a range of activities based on the themes of International, Community and Values – these have included dry stone walling, working with the National Trust and the Allsop memorial trust on Brean Down and Steepholme, attending the World Scout Jamboree in, completing an extreme Explorer Belt expedition in Uzbekistan, exploration and discussion of personal beliefs and voluntary roles at international camps in the UK
They have each practiced and developed a skill and also a physical activity over the course of a year, meeting objectives to demonstrate progression.
They have provided service over more than 12 months as Explorer Scout Young Leaders, to ensure that younger members can enjoy the benefits of Scouting.
They have undertaken a residential project and they have also planned, practiced and undertaken a 4-day expedition in wild country.
As Queen’s Scouts, Matthew and Andrew have developed their skills and reached the pinnacle of Scouting – it is the highest award possible for youth members. They should not, not underestimate their achievements … and should use these skills to reach the top in life.
Andrew and Matt were presented with their Queen’s Scouts certificates and badges by the County Commissioner and the Moors and Coastal District Commissioner, Dawn Wilson.
We wish Andrew, Matt and their families a wonderful day at Windsor for St George’s Day parade. Somerset County is very proud of them
