Horner Wood Scout campsite is located in a beautiful secluded location within Exmoor National Park. Somerset County Scouts offer the site for use by members of The Scouts, Girlguiding and other youth groups (such as schools and ACF).
The site, which forms part of the Holnicote Estate – one of the largest areas of land owned by the National Trust, is leased to the Somerset County Scouts. The site is bounded on the East, West and South by an SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest), is in the middle of a National Nature Reserve and an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
There are three camping fields – The East field which takes about 40 people; the South field which takes about 70 people; and the West field, which can be divided, takes about 130 people. The fields are level and free draining and have the benefit of mains water. An on-site Toilet block was built in 2013.
The fields are on the banks of the Horner Water, a river running through the site. The ground is very stony.
Hike Sites – sites for overnight stops can be booked and will be allocated as appropriate, usually at the top of the East field.
Parking – There are three areas on the site where parking is permitted, one on each field. These are all on grass so can be slippery when the weather is wet. In wet weather it is better not to park on the site as the grass very quickly churns up into mud. There is a large car park in the middle of Horner, and some parking is available just outside the camp site on the track leading to it.
Depending upon the condition of the ground, heavy vehicles with canvas and equipment can be permitted onto the grass of the West and South fields to road, but as a general principle vehicles should not go onto the camping area of the fields, or be parked there.
No dogs are allowed on the site.
National Trust and Planning restrictions stipulate that no Caravans or Motor Homes are allowed on the site.
